Why Your Current Maths Revision Probably Isn't Working

Here's something no one tells you: reading through your maths textbook counts as almost zero revision. It feels productive. It looks like studying. But passive reading does almost nothing for a subject where you need to do things under timed conditions.

Most students spend the bulk of their revision time highlighting notes, re-copying examples, and watching YouTube explanations — all of which have their place, but none of which will actually prepare you for sitting Paper 1 in a cold exam hall in May.

The students who jump from a grade 4 to a grade 7 in six weeks don't study harder. They study differently. This guide explains exactly what that difference looks like. Step 1: Know the Spec Before You Revise Anything

The AQA GCSE Maths specification is publicly available and completely free. Download it. Print it if you need to. Every single topic that can appear on your exam is listed there — and there are no surprises, no hidden topics, nothing the examiners are allowed to throw at you that isn't on that list.

Go through the specification and do an honest self-assessment. For each topic area, rate yourself: confident, shaky, or no idea. This takes about 20 minutes and immediately tells you where to spend your time. Without this step, you're revising at random — which is exactly what most students do.

The key topic areas for Higher tier are: Number (including fractions, surds, standard form), Algebra (equations, sequences, quadratics, graphs), Ratio, proportion and rates of change, Geometry and measures (including trigonometry and circle theorems), Probability, and Statistics. Foundation covers the same broad areas but with less complexity and no circle theorems, surds, or the trickier function notation questions.

The Topics Worth the Most Marks (and the Most Effort)

Algebra consistently accounts for the largest share of marks on AQA Higher papers — roughly 30% of the total. If you're aiming for a grade 6 or above, you cannot afford to be weak on solving equations, rearranging formulae, or working with quadratics.

Specifically, the topics that appear on almost every paper:

  • Simultaneous equations — both substitution and elimination methods. A guaranteed question every year, often worth 4–5 marks.
  • Quadratic equations — factorising, the quadratic formula, and completing the square. Examiners love these because there are multiple methods and students often choose the wrong one under pressure.
  • Straight-line graphs — finding gradients, y-intercepts, equations of lines, and perpendicular lines. Not glamorous, but easy marks if you know them cold.
  • Trigonometry — SOH CAH TOA for right-angled triangles, then the sine and cosine rules for non-right-angled ones. These questions are always there on Paper 2 or 3.
  • Proportion and compound measures — direct and inverse proportion, speed/distance/time, density. These catch a lot of students because they look straightforward but the wording can be deceptive.

On Foundation, give particular attention to fractions, percentages, ratio and proportion, and basic probability — these are the topics where Foundation students lose the most marks unnecessarily.

The Right Way to Use Past Papers

Past papers are the single most effective revision tool for maths — but almost everyone uses them wrong. The typical approach is to sit a paper, check the answers, feel vaguely bad about the ones you got wrong, and move on. That's not revision. That's testing.

Here's what to do instead. When you finish a past paper question and get it wrong, don't just look at the mark scheme answer. Work backwards. Read the mark scheme carefully and figure out exactly which step you missed or where your method diverged from the correct one. Then, without looking at the solution, try that same type of question from a different paper. If you get it right, the concept is starting to stick. If you get it wrong again, you've found a genuine gap — and that's far more valuable information than a tick or a cross.

AQA publishes every past paper and mark scheme from 2017 onwards on their website, plus specimen papers. That's a substantial bank of material. Work through at least 5–6 full papers before your exam, and do them timed — 1 hour 30 minutes for Paper 1, and 1 hour 30 minutes each for Papers 2 and 3.

The Spaced Repetition Secret

Your brain forgets things on a predictable curve. Cramming works for 24 hours and then most of it evaporates. Spaced repetition — reviewing material at increasing intervals — is how you actually move things into long-term memory.

In practice, this means: when you revise simultaneous equations on Monday, revisit them briefly on Wednesday, then again the following Monday, then once more a week after that. By the time your exam arrives, that topic feels automatic rather than effortful. It takes more planning upfront, but the payoff is enormous. Calculator vs Non-Calculator: They Need Different Skills

Paper 1 is non-calculator. Students consistently underestimate how much this changes what's being tested. You need to be genuinely fast at mental arithmetic, long division, fraction arithmetic, and manipulating surds without reaching for a calculator.

Practice these individually. Time yourself multiplying two-digit numbers. Practice simplifying fractions under 60-second time pressure. On Paper 1, if you're slow at basic arithmetic, you'll run out of time before you reach the harder questions — which is where the grade 7, 8, and 9 marks live.

Papers 2 and 3 are calculator papers, but that doesn't mean you can be lazy. Examiners know you have a calculator and will set questions that test method and reasoning rather than computation. Knowing how to use the calculator efficiently — especially for trigonometry, standard form, and statistical calculations — is a skill worth practising explicitly.

A 6-Week Revision Sprint

If your exams are six weeks away, here's a realistic schedule. Weeks 1 and 2: cover Number and Algebra topics systematically, doing past paper questions on each topic as you go. Week 3: Geometry, measures, and trigonometry. Week 4: Statistics, probability, and any remaining gaps from your self-assessment. Weeks 5 and 6: full timed past papers under exam conditions, with detailed error analysis.

Don't skip the error analysis in those final weeks. That's where the gains are. Every mistake is specific — maybe you always forget the constant when integrating, or you mix up the cosine rule formula, or you make arithmetic slips when rearranging equations. Write these down. Review them the morning before your exam. Those patterns are what the paper will test.
